Do I need to know any BSL to start?
No experience with British Sign Language will be needed for foundation level qualifications. We welcome complete beginners and will provide comprehensive support to centres.
When will SignConnects qualifications be available?
We are currently developing our qualifications and working towards regulatory approval. Sign up for our newsletter or contact us for updates on availability.
What happens if I don’t pass my BSL assessment?
Most qualifications allow opportunities to retake practical and written assessments. Your centre will explain their resit policies and provide additional support.
Will I learn about Deaf culture as well as BSL?
Absolutely. Our qualifications will include Deaf awareness and cultural understanding, developed in partnership with Deaf Viewpoint and the Deaf community.
Can hearing people study BSL qualifications?
Yes, our qualifications are designed for both hearing learners and Deaf students, creating inclusive learning environments.
Do I need to interact with the Deaf community during my studies?
While not mandatory at Levels 1 and 2, we strongly encourage interaction with the deaf community. For Levels 3 and 6, however, candidates will be required to work with deaf clients or undertake voluntary work with deaf charities or organisations, as this forms a compulsory element of successfully completing the course.
What makes SignConnects different from other BSL awarding bodies?
The curriculum has been designed to embed deaf culture and awareness, with sensitivity to the barriers the deaf community faces every day. Real-life experiences have been incorporated to reflect these challenges. In developing this qualification, we worked closely with Deaf Viewpoint, CODAs, SEND professionals, BSL interpreters and other professional bodies to ensure it represents multi-agency collaboration—an essential element in promoting inclusivity.
What if I have additional learning needs or disabilities?
We offer comprehensive, reasonable adjustments and work closely with SEND professionals to ensure our qualifications are accessible to all learners.
