British Sign Language

British Sign Language (BSL) is the natural language of the Deaf community in the United Kingdom. It has its own unique grammar, syntax and structure that are completely different from spoken and written English. Rather than relying on words, BSL uses a rich combination of handshapes, movements, facial expressions, gestures, and body language to convey meaning.

BSL is not a universal language; it is one of many sign languages used around the world, each with its own cultural and linguistic identity. In 2003, the UK Government officially recognised BSL as a language, and in 2022, the British Sign Language Act gave it legal status in England, Scotland, and Wales. Today, over 150,000 people in the UK use BSL as their first or preferred language, making it an essential tool for communication, inclusion, and cultural expression within the Deaf community.

Our Journey:

SignConnects is a new awarding body dedicated to making British Sign Language (BSL) accessible to everyone. Working with Deaf experts and experienced professionals, we have piloted our courses in universities with outstanding results. Students were not only able to communicate confidently at Level 2, but also developed a holistic understanding of BSL, Deaf culture and the barriers faced by the deaf community on a daily. This fostered greater empathy, reduced misconceptions and encouraged a more inclusive approach when engaging with Deaf/deaf individuals.

Our ethos is simple: to promote inclusivity, accessibility and recognition of BSL as a vital part of communication and society. By continuing to deliver modules at university level—and now expanding as an awarding body – SignConnects is shaping the next generation of learners and advocates who will help break down barriers and build a more equitable future.
